Most studios won't use your own barbell unless it was used for a previous tongue piercing you had. See we need to know what the barbell is made of , some barbells available from "novelty stores" are generally junk and that's the last thing we want to put into your tongue. Now if the barbell is the right size for your piercing and you can confirm it's good quality, and the piercer is good with that, they will need to autoclave it before it can be used. This involves putting it in the autoclave to sterilize it before it can be considered safe for a new piercing. So your best bet is to call your local body piercing studio's and see what they have to say. So will, some won't, others might.
you unscrew the top ball and then pull the barbell out through the bottom
Sure take the 12g barbell out for about a week maybe two then put a 14g barbell in the piercing, it should have shrunk by that time.
Well at home you can't actually "sterilize" your barbell however if you are looking to just clean it, take it apart and place the parts in a small container or cup and pour 70% Isoproply alcohol on it and leave it for about 15 ~ 30 minutes in the alcohol. That should pretty much kill the bacteria in and on the barbell. Sterilizing the barbell requires the use of a autoclave (used in piercing studios, tattoo shops and hospitals) to actually sterilize the barbell (cycle takes about 30 ~40 minutes). You could take it down to your local piercing studio and for a small fee they would autoclave the barbell for you.
First tongue piercings don't have "rings" second yes you can take it out early but the question is why would you want to?
unscrew one of the balls on the barbell [i usually do the bottom one, cause i can clamp it with my teeth to avoid it gowing all over the place] and take it out :L sometimes its kinda hard to get it loosened
Chances are really good that the piercing will shrink making reinsertion of the barbell difficult, if this occurs visit your local body piercer where they can reinsert it using and insertion taper.
You may loose the piercing, due to the nature of the surgery, you wont be able to put the barbell back in until you are discharged from the hospital. And at that you will want to make sure that the barbell has been autoclaved* ( *re-sterilized ) before you put it back into the piercing so that it doesn't infect your throat. I would discuss this with you doctor before your surgery and see what he/she has to say about it. Keeping things clean in a post op situation should be your biggest concern, heal your throat first and worry about your tongue later.
i would take it too the vet? sounds really sick
Well actually that's not a good thing, the barbell was too short for the piercing to allow for swelling, the expansion of the piercing hole is and indication of some sensitivity to the metal or the aftercare product you are using. Consider seeing your piercer tomorrow to have them take a look.
Every time you take it out, which for msot is nightly.
Nope, i've had my tongue pierced, and i didn't have to take my lip piercing out.
4 - 6 weeks is the usual healing time for most tongues. Now this may be different from person to person but 6 weeks is usually about the longest. It is then that we suggest to our clients to change to a shorter barbell {Usually 5/8"} so as to keep from damaging the palate or the enamel on your teeth. Hope this helps..........
