No you can use multiple protocols.
Identify the networktranspor layer protocols used for windows file sharing when the protocols are installed alone.
Go to start, then click on My Computer, then on the left hand side click on "Network Connections" or "My Network Places". Then on the left click "View my connections" Find the connection you are using and right click and choose properties. Under the General Tab scroll down, the very last protocol should be TCP IP. If it's checked then it should be installed and working properly. OR Click on start, then click on RUN and type in cmd in the space provided. When the black box comes up type in ipconfig and press enter. If you see gateway address and IP address with ip addresses then you know you are using tcpip and you are communicating with the router/gateway.
Because it is not installed on the server
There are many protocols that can be used over serial ports. The most common ones are RS-232 and Z-Modem for file transfers.
The network layer protocol is Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)

TCP/IP is not something you can turn on or off; if the networking software is installed in your system then it is always looking at network data traffic. The use of TCP/IP is governed by the protocols you are using, and that is governed by the application program you may be using. There isn't anything that a user needs to do (besides installing the network driver) to use TCP/IP in an Internet connection. (You do have to configure the workstation or device, but that's about it).
Protocols are needed for predetermined understandings for communications. Though it helps the harmony and smooth functioning of a system, such contribution to a system may benefit or offend you from where you stand. It may be difficult for some born into a system with blind faith to understand how they are being herded like sheep by following protocols. Accepting or rejecting to protocols may be a life changing decision. It is also true for computer networking and lifeless corporations. Sight beyond sight! - Lakshan
