Why were the economic conditions and chief occupations in Rome diuring the Early Empire?

There were the patricians who was the aristocracy and and the owners of most of the large landed estates. The equities were the entrepreneurial class of merchants, bankers, moneylenders and investors in shipping and mining. There were civil servants, engineers and architects. At the bottom of the ladder there were the artists (except for the celebrated ones) the artisans and the peasants and the masses of the unemployed or underemployed poor. Actors, dancers and other performers and prostitutes and pimps were also at the bottom of the ladder and were infames. Their status was infamia which was the loss of legal and social status and an exclusion from the protection the law gave to Roman citizens. The above refers to the social ladder of Roman citizens. The slaves were below them. Most of them worked in the fields of the large landed estates. MAny of them were domestic servants in the houses of the rich. Some worked in the mines and some worked for the state. Most Romans lived on the upper floors of the insulae (apartment blocks four to seven floors high) which had small and overcrowded rooms with no running water, cooking facilities or toilets. People went there only to sleep and lived outdoors. They went to outdoors public toilets and to the public baths and eat outdoors. Bread and other grain based foods were all that the poor could afford. Therefore, the bakeries were the places where the food they ate was made and sold. The bakeries were extremely busy and, due to the masses of customers, people ate sitting on outdoors benches. They were scorned by the upper classes who had a kitchen in their domus (detached house)

Why did the eastern patriarch reject the pope's claim to be the head of the church?

Catholic Answer:The presence of Peter in Rome, not explicitly affirmed in but consistent with the New Testament, is explicitly affirmed by Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Irenaeus of Lyon and other early Christian writers, and no other city has ever claimed to be the place of his death. The same witnesses imply that Peter was the virtual founder of the Church of Rome, though not its founder in the sense of initiating a Christian community there. They also speak of Peter as the one who initiated its episcopal succession, but speak of Linus as the first "bishop", while it is commonly held today that the Christians in Rome did not act as a single united community under a single leader until some time in the 2nd century. The Eastern Church had been separated by distance from Rome for centuries with little oversite from the Western Church. Diuring this time they strayed from the original teachings and structure of the Church and developed their own culture and traditions. They were not about to acknowledge the Bishop of Rome as the leader and take a chance they would lose their own identity.

What determines the amount of money a country can print?

AnswerA countries central banking system generally decides what amount of money a country can print. Contrary to popular belief, gold or precious metals are irrelevent and uncessary to give money a value. The only reason that gold (or other metals) have value is because people have accepted them as having value. Just as people may accept that an apple might have some sort of value or a banana might have some sort of value. Gold (and other metals) are a scarce resource and therefore had been accepted as a medium of echange long before paper money.A medium of echange is necessary for two reasons.1. People need to have a base from what to compare things to. That is, it is difficult to determine how many apples equal a banana or how many cars equal an airplane for example. We do however know that say an apple is worth $.50 and a banana is worth $.75.2. People need a way to store their productive efforts so that they can be used in the future as necessary.A country should generally wish that their paper money is still a scarce resource (that is the country's bank controls the amount printed and makes it difficult to copy). In this way money can be used to reimburse an individual for his production efforts and then he or she can use this money to pay someone else for producing something else they don't have but they need.Generally speaking a reputable country will produce enough bills and coinage to 'meet demand' - naturally money is always 'in demand' so this means replacing bills damaged through use. In the case of the US it should be noted that most 'money' doesn't exist in the form of money, and as a matter of fact most currency is actually held outside the country by foreigners. If too much money is printed or created holders may fear loss of value from dillution and start selling dollars to buy the currency of other countries. Like a stock the dollar will fall until foreign investors support it by buying American food, corporations, resources, and goods and services again.
