The Poverty Threshold
The minimum guideline for one child is 20% of net income, including pension.
You don't need any assets, per se. It's an income test. You have to show that you have 1.1 times the federal poverty level for the number of people who will be living in your home, initially (that's a minimum of two; you, and your fiance). If you don't have that income, THEN you need to show enough assets to prove that you can support your fiance, financially, for three years (so, essentially, you need 3.3 times the federal poverty level for at least two people, in your bank account). Here is a description of the poverty level. http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/09poverty.shtml
The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses the poverty threshold established by the U.S. Census Bureau, which is based on the cost of a minimum food diet in 1963, adjusted for inflation and updated annually. The threshold varies by family size and composition and is calculated using a formula that considers the poverty rate and economic conditions. This measure helps determine eligibility for various federal and state assistance programs, ensuring support reaches those in need.
