depends- it it's first class or has a return auth. stamp on it they will return it, if you live in a small town and the post office knows you, drop it in a mailbox as address unknown or not at this address out of town- it will get returned. Argh dont rely on it. I'm waiting for a uni essay back which I sent by recorded delivery but my tutor couldn't pick up. I had to wait 9days before they said they'd sent it back, and its a week tomorrow that they apparently sent it. Useless...

If you need to forward mail to someone who no longer lives at your address, you can write "Return to Sender – No Longer at This Address" on the envelope and put it back in the mailbox. Where can you return an item?

If you opened it: Depending who you ordered from, there may be a return label in the box. This will get it to the right department so you can get a refund, and some are prepaid. You reseal the box and send it back through the mail. If you didn't open it: Write "return to sender," and take it to the post office for mailing.

You must write the address of the intended recipient, together with the name of the person or company. It is optional to write the return address.
