the little gear that turns the numbers is broke and the only way to fix is replace the whole speedometer.

It should have a spring loaded automatic tensioner, if the spring is broke replace the tensioner arm assembly

Sure, it shouldn't be too big a challenge. I suggest picking up a Haynes or Chilton manual for your truck. It should have all the procedures and pictures you'll need.
