It is not the role of schools to preach any one particular religion or denomination, so unless you attended a private, religious school you would have had much the same experience as most other people. However you do need to know about the different religious beliefs in the world. It is important that children have an understanding of other people's religious beliefs as well as their own. You also need to know the role religion has in society and the basics of belief.
All religions offer hope for the future, often in the form of belief in heaven as a reward for the righteous. Christians and Muslims believe that believers who have led good lives here on earth will be rewarded with eternal life in heaven, while non-believers and those who have committed serious sins without seeking forgiveness will go to hell, a place of damnation and torment. Jews share the Christian and Muslim belief in heaven, but not the belief in hell.
For Christians, to be a believer is to believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, who came to earth and was crucified so that our sins will be forgiven. Most Christians believe that there are three persons in one God - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. For Muslims, to be a believer is to believe that God has no son and that his final prophet was Muhammad. Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in the one God and no other.
Not all religions have only one God. Hinduism is the largest religion with more than one god. Just a little like Christianity, Hinduism has three gods in one godhead, but each of these gods is also many other gods. Buddhism is another important religion, famous for its peaceful nature.
Religion no longer has such a dominant place in society as in centuries past. Many people, especially in Western countries regard religion as unimportant in their lives, often forming the belief that there is no God and no heaven or hell. In most Western countries, politicians are now expected to govern according to the will of the people, rather than the dictates of any religious group.
