Mostly only high bilirubin levels indicate liver damage. Too much gas could just result from eating a bad meal, or a slight bacterial infection in the gut
That sounds a littel high. What are your liver enzyme levels? and are you jaundice?
the liver
Um... YES!! The high normal bilirubin level is 1.5
well, you see.. jaundice is caused by the elevation of UNCONJUGATED bilirubin level in our blood.. a high level of unconjugated bilirubin in blood will enter our body tissue and make our skin looks yellow.bilirubin is metabolized in the liver, thus making the unconjugated bilirubin changed into conjugated one. and these conjugated bilirubin will be excreted to our intestine and it will give color to our urine an feces.in patients with choledocolithiasis, there is an obstruction caused by the gallstone inside the duct where conjugated bilirubin should be excreted.. this obstruction makes the liver unable to metabolize the unconjugated bilirubin, and so the level of unconjugated bilirubin will rise, having effect of jaundice.

Tests that can indicate liver dysfunction include liver function tests (LFTs) such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which measure liver enzyme levels. High levels of these enzymes can indicate liver damage. Other tests include bilirubin levels, which can indicate impaired liver function, and prothrombin time (PT), which measures the liver's ability to produce clotting factors.
High levels of bilirubin in the blood may be caused by: infection, such as of the gall bladder; inherited diseases, such as Gilbertâ??s syndrome; disease that cause liver damage, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis or mono; and diseases that block the bile ducts such as gall stones or pancreatic cancer. High levels can also be caused by the rapid destruction of red blood cells, such as from sickle cell disease or a reaction to a blood transfusion. Certain medicines can also cause a rise in the levels of bilirubin.
jaundice the normal serum bilirubin level is 0.5 to 1.5mg%. jaundice occurs when the bilirubin level exceeds 2mg%. the increased blood level of bilirubin is called hyperbilirubinemia. excess bilirubin from blood diffuses into the tissues, skin and mucous membrane, colouring them yellow. this condition caused by overflow of bilirubin is called jaundice.
You might have some liver issues going on. Get lots of sunlight and take vitamin D, and follow doctor's instructions.
Assuming that you mean total bilirubin levels in (mmol/L), the range should be 5 to 17 in adults. So, 33.9 would be high. High biliubin suggests that there may be damage, an infection, or some loss of function in the liver, gall bladder or pancreas. Certain medicines and supplements may also increase bilirubin levels. This is a preliminary test. The actual cause of the disruption will require most testing.Just for your information, newborn infants can have very high bilirubin levels (above 100-200 mmol/L) and still be within the normal range.
Bilirubin is a pigment that is made by the liver and is found in bile. Certain diseases can cause high levels of bilirubin, such as a gallbladder infection, gallstones, cirrhosis, hepatitis, and pancreatic cancer.
the activity of the enzyme UDP-glucuronyl transferase is low in the newborns.so UDP- glucuronic acid for conjugation is limited. this leads to high level of unconjugated bilirubin (beyond 25mg/dl) .it may cross the blood brain barrier resulting in hyperbilirubinemic toxic encephalopathy or kernicterus . prevention aspects: the drug phenobarbital is used, as it induce bilirubin metabolising enzymes in liver. in some neonates blood transfusion may be necessaryto prevent brain damage. phototherapy is continuously carried out till the serum bilirubin becomes normal. phototheraphy deals with the exposure of the jaundiced neonates to blue light as bilirubin absorbs the blue light and get converted to non toxic lumirubin and get excreted.
