No it doesn't necessarily mean there is something going on. Chances are he may think his friends aren't too great and can't count on them not being pretty immature- this is probably the case if you haven't met them before, or only for a very short time.
It could mean that when he is with you he wants to spend time with you not the people he sees a lot of the time :) you have to decide how much you trust him and make a call yourself, but don't do something rash you might regret!
