'Hate' is a very harsh word and should be used sparingly. If he has told you he loves you then say, 'I'm sorry, I don't feel the same way about you, but we could be friends.' Of course he will be hurt, but it's better to be honest than tell someone you hate them and hurt their feelings. Whenever you are in doubt ask yourself how you would feel if you were to have someone say or treat you in such a manner as you have described.
