Depends on how his family looks at you and how you feel. If you have kids with him and the grandparents are in the children's lives I would say yes you would be an in law to the family. If no children and you really don't have contact with the family I would say that you aren't.

Are you married to your father in law? You can not divorce someone you are not married to. If you are really talking about ending any kind of relationship with him, then just do it by refusing to have any involvement with him of any kind. How does your husband feel about this? If you are divorced from your husband, there is no reason for continuing a relationship with HIS father - unless you have children. Then you have to consider that this man is their grandfather and an important part of your children's life. You shouldn't take that away from them.
