Use a bioenzymatic pet odor neutralizer. The enzymes in the product actually digest and eliminate animal-based stains and odors. Available at pet stores. Use Febreze, an odor-eliminating spray product that will get rid of virtually any smell, including those left by a ferret. Wash the ferret's bedding twice a week and keep litter box changed. Do not bathe your ferret more than once a month, it's not necessary to bathe them at all. Frequent bathing of ferrets make them smell more musky.

The ferrets diet is very important for overall health, and may be a contributing factor to odors. Make sure you are feeding a high quality ferret food - no cat food, no dog food, no vegetables, no fruit, no grains - Ferrets are strict carnivores - Meat products

Ferrets do have a slight musk smell which is more pronounced when they first wake up - which may be offensive to some people, but not to others. Most of the musk smell gets into their bedding, so frequent washing is necessary for odor control.

To keep ferret odors down - It is not necessary to bathe a ferret, unless they get into something that warrants a bath. Ferrets are pretty clean animals, and they will groom themselves. Ferrets have a slight musky scent. Some enjoy playing in the water, put them in the bathtub with a container of water. Or if they like getting in the shower, let them get wet every so often. Frequent bathing strips the oils from their fur, and cause them to produce more oil, and will make them smell. If you do bathe, use shampoo formulated for ferrets. Change the litter box about once a day, and wash their bedding about twice a week. Do not use wood chips - retains odors and causes respiratory illness in ferrets. Also feed a high quality ferret food. Avoid ferret foods that contains fish as an ingredient, which is a modified mink food, and not necessary for ferrets, to reduce odors.

Ferret also need to have their ears cleaned you can use a cotton bud or Q-tip, with a little olive oil, or purchased product and swab the area around the opening of the ear canal, but never push it in the ear.

• Simple, keep their cage clean, and give them a bath periodically. I have had ferrets for years and have never had an odor problem as long as I kept their area and them clean. The above contributor has made excellent points. Still, I have never had a problem when it came to bathing them. Of course, as indicated above, too much can cause problems.

• Ferrets sold in the U S are already descented - In the U K, it is considered mutilation and a veterinarian will not preform surgery, unless medically necessary.

• The more out of cage time you give your ferrets the less they will smell. Ferrets naturally have an odor to them but the main reason they "stink" is because their owners aren't cleaning up after them as often as they need to be. Also the some stores like Petco don't take care of them the way they should be due to inexperience, they feed them food which has fish, keep them in a poorly ventilated cage and use carefresh like bedding.. and don't get me started on the litter.

• Our science teacher has 3 ferrets at school they are very well taken care of and their cage is maintained so it doesn't smell. But if they weren't I imagine they would smell

You will have to carefully take the couch apart somehow to rescue your ferret. Ferrets cannot go very long without eating or drinking. If a ferret has nothing to drink for more than 24 hours, he will refuse to eat and can easily dehydrate and die in a few days.
