Approximately 20% of mares will continue to show heat signs while in foal...some for only a cycle or two and some through their entire pregnancy....and a few of those will continue to accept a stallion even though pregnant. I'm not aware of exact stats on that however.

Yes, dystocia can cause a severe tear of the vagina and/or rectum which can require surgical repair. If an attendant is present, they can assist the mare in delivery by pulling during contractions only on the two front legs, which should be followed closely by the foals nose and head. If the foal is not positioned properly or is too large, it can result in the death of the foal and even the mare too, especially if the mare has not had a foal before.

If a mare shows signs of lactation (bagging up with milk) she is most likely in foal and within 30 days of having her baby. Some mares have hormone imbalances that can cause them to lactate, but this is rare. Additionally, it is rare, but some mares who want a foal of their own can spontaneously begin to lactate.

If a equine veterinarian gives the mare a reproductive physical and approves her for breeding then, yes she could very well be bred and produce a foal.

Can a 20 year old mare be bred to foal or is that to old?

That depend on the mare.... if she has had a foal before and is having regular cycles it might be OK. If she has never had a foal before its not a good idea. The mares uterus looses its elasticity when they get older. I know of lots of older mares that have had beautiful healthy foals..... but I know of even more old mares that will no longer get in foal. Its really up to your mare and your vet. Good Luck!

How until the mare has a foal?

342 days at most( almost a year)

How long does a foal nurse from its mother?

The length of time that a pony foal will nurse depends on the living situation of the pony mare. If the mare lives on a busy breeding farm the foal will likely only be able to nurse up until the fourth to sixth month of age as it will be manually weaned by a human. If the mare is allowed to keep the foal at her side without human interference in the weaning process the foal could nurse up until it is a year old before the mare would naturally wean it off her.

Is it ok for mare in foal to run with 2 year old colt?

She can run with the colt, but he may still harass her into attempting to breed with him, which could cause stress to the mare, which in turn could cause her to abort the foal.

How soon do you introduce new stablemates to a mare and foal?

The earliest you should wean a foal from the baby is 6 months. Though it is possible to do it earlier at about 3 months but is not recommended since the growth of the foal without its mothers milk can be stunted. If you wean a foal earlier then six months it should only be because either the mare is losing a lot of weight and not putting it back on or if something happens to the mare to where she is not able to nurse anymore. Foals in the wild can nurse off of their mothers for over a year.

Can a horse have three foal?

Not all at the same time. If your question was over the lifetime of the mare then yes, a mare can have a foal every year after puberty and are often still reproductive well into their twenties. While it is not good husbandry to breed any animal every year, theoretically you could get 20 or more foals from one mare if you bred her every year of her reproductive life.

How many months does it take for a mare to foal?

Fillys can show heat as early as 6 months. That being said immature fillys will generally cycle sporadically or produce what is called a persistent follicle that limits their ability to get in foal even if bred. Two year old fillys will often cycle regularly.

How many pregnancies would be possible in a lifetime for a mare?

If she is healthy and well kept, a mare can have a foal every year from age around 3. I personally know one mare who had a foal every year for 21 years, an another who had her last foal at age 33.
