Mobile phone companies have the ability to BLOCK the IMEI number - which renders the device unusable. Unlike getting a phone 'unlocked' (for example - if you forgot your password) - blocking the IMEI number is PERMANENT ! Even if the thief changes the SIM card - the device will NOT work.
