To date, no Single Stage To Orbit (SSTO) rocket has ever been manufactured. Tsiolkovsky's rocket equation shows that dead weight will prevent reaching orbit unless the ratio of propellant to structural mass (called mass ratio) is very high - between about 10 and 25 (10 to 25 parts propellant weight to 1 part structural weight, depending on propellant type).
The Space Shuttle SRBs weigh in at around 200,000 pounds each empty. Each SRB carries 1,100,000 pounds of propellant. That is a mass ratio of about 5. So a current SRB cannot reach orbit on its own. The SRBs are designed very strong to carry the entire load of the Space Shuttle system when on the transporter-crawler. If the structural weight of the SRB could be reduced by using a fiber-reinforced epoxy structure to below about 60,000 pounds, for a mass ratio of around 18, it could make orbital velocity without a payload. For orbital insertion, some guidance system would be necessary.
