The ALP won the federal election on December 2, 1972. Whitlam was sworn in as prime minister on December 5, 1972. Whitlam and his deputy, Lance Barnard were a two-man government until December 19, 1972, when the full ministry was sworn in.
The question is wrong. By the time Gough Whitlam was elected, there were no Australian combat troops in Vietnam - they had already been withdrawn by the Liberal government in line with the U.S. withdrawal. All that remained were 100 or so military advisers and embassy guards.
By being elected on December 2nd 1972, Prime Minister Edward Gough Whitlam advocated for the end of conscription. By achieving the votes in the Upper House and Lower House, the bill was passed to abolish conscription. Also, public support strengthened the bid to abolish conscription.
Gough Whitlam became Australia's 21st Prime Minister on 5 December 1972. His Labor government, the first after more than two decades, set out to change Australia through a wide-ranging reform program. Whitlam's term abruptly ended when his government was dismissed by the Governor-General on 11 November 1975.
