Humans, unlike a lot of animals, have an extended time of childhood. We're not even walking until several months after birth. Animals like cows are walking on day one. Humans aren't fully mature until around 20 years of age.

These animals also have more instincts and innate reactions in their nature.

Instead of being born with innate behaviors (unlearned, automatic/instinctual actions- these are different from reflexes), we learn a lot of our behavior.

The importance of early childhood in our lives is that it's the time when we learn. We see examples, we can make the most connections easiest, etc. Early childhood is a key development time. We need to stay active and learning in those times in order to develop appropriately.
