When they return he kills many and they learn to fear his blade. He keeps the dwarves together and leads them out of the spiders area.
It was Bilbo who did most of the fighting. The dwarves were still groggy due to the spider poison.
The movies do not tell why the Dwarves are hated in The Hobbit and The Hobbit DoS. However, it is believed that past wars and experiences are the reason the Dwarves are hated.
