In the history of Western Civilization in particular, the year 1789 is a very important historical "date." Marking the outbreak of the French Revolution, this year generally sparked the transformation of Europe from a traditional, monarchical, classed society into the modern society -- characterized above all by political liberalism, including a basic commitment to democracy and an increasingly global values-perspective -- that it has become.

The Egyptians know that lots of their history is and/or was in the enviroment.
The year of 1789 was the beginning of the French Revolution. There was a famine and rioters stormed the prison called the Bastille. The revolution led to the execution of French King Louis 14th and Queen Marie Antoinette. It was a bloody revolution and people of the noble stature were targets for execution. Eventually one of the famous revolutionaries, Robespierre was also executed.
History is important to be studied in todays modern civilization because we had to know about our country's culture

That could mean a lot of things, that's quite a large chunk of history there. However, the most obvious answer would be something to do with the English Restoration in 1660 and either the election of George Washington or the start of the french revolution in 1789. Those are probably the most significant events affect balance of power on those dates in western civilization.
