The capstone was laid on the monument on December 6, 1884. The monument was formally dedicated on February 22 (Washington's birthday), 1885. The monument was constructed in two phases with a twenty year gap between them. You can see the dividing line on the monument where one phase ended and the other began. Phase One (1848 to 1858): To the 152-foot (46 m) level, under the direction of Superintendent William Daugherty. Phase Two (1878 to 1888): Work completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, commanded by Lt. Col. Thomas L. Casey.
