Date of rank is in AR 600-8-19, paragraph 1-13. Perhaps these sub-paragraphs will help answer your question.m. DOR for Soldiers voluntarily reduced to enter active service in contingency operations (applies to ARNG) will
be adjusted-
(1) To include all service in the grade to which reduced and any higher enlisted grade.
(2) To include Soldiers who were not promoted to the previously held grade while on active duty, as of the day after
release from active duty plus all previous time served in the same or a higher enlisted pay grade.
n. For Soldiers who were former officers who enlist or reenlist in a grade determined per the ARNG Enlistment
Criteria, the DOR they had in prior enlisted service in the same or a higher enlisted grade is adjusted, excluding all
officer service and periods in which they did not have military status. For Soldiers awarded a higher grade than they
held during prior enlisted service, the DOR is the date of enlistment or reenlistment. Special grades (E5 and E6) for
officers and warrant officer candidates or the time served in these statuses (applies to ARNG) are not used.

You know a lot of prior service Marines join the Army but are there a lot of prior service Soldiers that join the Marines?
It does happen, but I don't think it happens as often as the reverse. When I was in MCT(Marine Combat Training) in '99, we had a former Army SSGT who came through with us, he was a Lance Corporal(E-3)at the time since the Marines don't really carry over rank, but he did gain Corporal by the time he left the 2.5 week course. otherwise, in 4 years I never came across any other former soldiers. I have met numerous soldiers who were prior service Marines, and seemed quite successful at it.
