You can directly edit a Smart Object but they a separate from the main composition...that is what makes them Smart. You can create multiple copies of a Smart Object, edit it once and then bammy wham...all of them get updated at once.
All you need to do is Double Click the thumbnail of the Smart Object layer and then you can edit it like normal layers.
