St Paul was the first biblical author to use the term 'church'. In many cases, he clearly used the term to mean the church as an institution, but in other cases, it is not entirely clear whether he is talking about a church community or a building. More likely, in those contexts he was talking about the Christian communities, in which case we should say there were no churches at that time. Prior to the book of Acts there were one or more places where the Israelites congregated to worship their God. The first was the Tabernacle, a mobile center of worship. Later Solomon built the first Temple, which was destroyed and rebuilt by the time Jesus was ministering. As Jesus predicted, it was destroyed in AD 70. The word translated "church" in the New Testament is ekklesia, which can also refer to a crowd, a gathering, or a mob. Since the followers of Jesus suffered heavy persecution, no formal buildings or similar meeting places that we in the civilized 21st century world would call "churches" could exist. There were, however, gatherings of believers that met in homes and various other secret places.
