If I'm correct about what you're describing, those would be Hammer-ons and Pull-offs. I suggest going through the Tutorials to get a better idea of what they are. In general, it means that you do not need to strum when hitting these notes IF you hit the previous note. However, you still need to tap the note in sync with when it crosses your target on the Fret Board. If you miss one note in a series of Hammer-ons or Pull-offs, you will need to strum again. Otherwise, you will not hit any notes. Once again, I suggest going through the Tutorial for lessons on this. Hope this helps.
