There are two school of thoughts in Hinduism, I am not sure which is actually correct, or whether both are correct. First theory states, that when a person dies he is reborn, as a human, maybe as a man or woman, but reborn for sure. The body changes, the soul remains the same. Just as we change our clothes, the soul changes its body. The memories of the body go with the body itself, all relations are destroyed to form new relations with the new life. There have been instances when people have been able to remember their past lives and precisely pinpointed certain elements which only they could've known. To break from this cycle of births and rebirths, mankind must acheive "Moksha" or "Nirvana". Scientific research still continues and challenges this theory. Another lesser known Hindu theory is somewhat similar to the first one, in the terms of rebirth, but this one states that to be a human, a soul should have lived several thousand lives as all god's creatures, and has to live through it, a soul gets the opportunity to prove it self as a human and hence achieve "nirvana". Basically, these are theories, one can only know for sure after death.

In Hinduism and Buddhism, it is believed that individuals go through a cycle of death and rebirth, known as reincarnation. This process is influenced by one's actions in previous lives and the concept of karma.
