Microsoft Word (and Mozilla's Firefox) uses a red wavy underline to indicate words that are not in the spell-check list for the program.
Words that have been spelt incorrectly are generally indicated with a pink zigzag line underneath.
The word that is not in the Excel dictionary or custom dictionary is identified by being underlined by a red zigzag line.

To disable spell check on Microsoft Word 2007, slick on the Microsoft Office Button. Then, click Proofing. Uncheck the 'Check spelling as you type' check box. You may also want to uncheck the 'Check grammar as you type' check box as well.
