In October Sky what is the relationship between Homer and Sonny?

in the story, sonny's relation with his father is a bit horrible, at first him and his father don't really have much to do with each other, it's not that they don't get along at first, its just they don't really have a relation ship or have much to do with each other. Then later in the book/movie, sonny and his father end up with a moretattered relation, they are start to seriously dislike the presents of one another mostly because of there different views of science and the world of space race. Then, after a long while of disagreement and a bit of hatred towards each other, they begin to Finlay start to seem to get along a little better then they once were. And Finlay in the end, Sonny and his father Finlay have a semi-normal relation that allows then to get along and his father starts to understand and respect his enthusiasm for technology and rocketry.
