In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl how do you get into the resort area?

As far as I know, there are two options for you: Either go around through the Survival Area, or Surf across from Battle Area. Either way, come stocked, because you'll face a lot of foes along the way.
You have to complete your Pokedex.
