The next version released was Crystal version, which adds several features to the same region used in Gold and Silver, Hoenn, in addition to allowing the main character to play as a girl for the first time.

The next generation of games released was Ruby and Sapphire versions, which take place in a new region, Hoenn, populated by Generation 3 Pokemon, in addition to some older Pokemon. Emerald Version adds more features and old Pokemon to Hoenn. They are not compatible with older versions.

The next generation of games to come out were two remakes of the old Red/Blue/Yellow generation, FireRed and LeafGreen versions. These versions are trade- and battle-compatible with Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, and introduce no new Pokemon.

The fourth generation of Pokemon makes their first appearance in Diamond and Pearl versions, set in a new region, Sinnoh. A third game containing more features, Platinum, came out later. They are not completely compatible with older versions, in that Pokemon can be imported from Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen, but cannot be returned to their original games.

Two new games, HeartGold and SoulSilver, remakes of the Gold/Silver/Crystal generation, are due out soon, and are said to be trade-compatible with Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
