Tom's dreams of becoming king had finally come true, but after a while he wanted to go back to his old lifestyle as a pauper on the streets. He mainly missed his mother and sisters and got tired of being prince. He got too confused many times on how to rule a country and felt bad that he left Edward in despair as a pauper for the first time. They both probably got tired of being called mad for telling the truth that one was the pauper and the other was king.

Tom helps Edward regain his rightful place as king because he realizes the injustice of the situation and wants to help his friend. Additionally, Tom sees the suffering and turmoil that has occurred since Edward's usurpation, and believes that returning Edward to the throne is the right thing to do.
