He tortured the buffalo because it was part of nam. To them everything was almost interchangable. A person, a tree, a baby buffalo, they all represented the deaths of his friends, the war he hated and the horrible things they were going through. He loved his friend Curt and he avenged his death in a way. Not to mention the war just seriously screwed up a lot of people and he was mad and hurt.
