I think Harper Lee does in this way because she wants to show (particularly to racist people) that also coloured people can be educated, smart and intelligent(so discrediting most of prejudices); she wants to show that coloured people can be like white people, that they are like white people, and that actually there aren't any differencies between them, apart from the colour of the skin.

Calpurnia is a black woman, but in the Finch house she has the same importance as a white one.
