In "To Kill a Mockingbird", Atticus was crestfallen when he learned of Tom's death. He explained he had talked to Tom about an appeal and said he told him, he believed they had a good chance of winning. He felt Tom just got tired of listening to "white men's ideas of good chances", which at this point, he knew did not apply to him.

Atticus explains that Tom's attempted escape was likely due to his fear of not receiving a fair trial in a racially biased court system. Tom knew the odds were stacked against him as a black man in the segregated South and saw no hope of justice in a trial where his word would be pitted against a white woman's.

Atticus speculated that Tom's escape was an attempt for Tom to regain control of his life. Tom's life had been dictated by white people and Atticus thought that Tom wanted to make his own choices for once.

Atticus said that Jem was trying hard to forget something, but what he was really doing was storing it away for a while, until enough time passed. Then he would be able to think about it and sort things out. When he was able to think about it, Jem would be himself again. Hope it helps.

If you mean escape from prison, then I think Tom Robinson lost hope, and became afraid for his life.
