None of the scenes in the movie Forrest Gump was actually filmed in Vietnam. In fact, none of the movie was filmed outside the U.S. The Viet Nam scenes were filmed on Fripp Island, South Carolina.

Gump wasn't a worldly kind of guy. His knowledge of the country, and the conflict going on there was probably limited at best. His only mention of it before he shipped out was that 'it's a whole other country'. Gump would not have been alone. Many of the young men that fought that war could not really understand the reason we were there.
