If you are referring to the right angle arrow at the end of a line, it indicates a line break. It still maintains the text as a single paragraph, so it is useful for formatting things like addresses. You get it by pressing Shift - Enter and it is only seen when the hidden characters are shown. It does not show in a printed document. It is also a feature in earlier versions of Microsoft Word.
