The long debate over lowering the voting age in America from 21 to 18 began during World War II and intensified during the Vietnam War, when young men denied the right to vote were being conscripted to fight for their country. They believed if they where old enough to die, that they were old enough to vote for the person sending them there.
The major argument used in support of the 26th amendment was that if you were old enough to be drafted, sent into battle, fight and die for your country then you were old enough to have a voice in the governance of that country through voting.
