Probably Douglas Mac Arthur was the best American leader. He came up with the idea of island hopping. That way America only captured the islands it needed. It saved a number of American lives as America went westward across the Pacific. He not only made smart military decisions but also made smart political decisions. He insisted the United States land in the Philippines for political reasons contrary to the ideas of Admiral Nimitz. This showed that the US would not abandon its friends. In Japan Mac Arthur refused to punish the Emperor. Mac Arthur realized that keeping the Emperor would bring peace and prevent guerrilla warfare.

While a case could be made for Patton as a military leader, he was not one to get civilians in conquered areas behind him.
