Operation Husky was actually the invasion of Sicily and not Italy. The invasion of mainland Italy was code named Operation Avalanche. As for why operations have the names they do - well, the idea is that the code name should have no connection whatsoever to the operation. Operation Husky was the invasion of Sicily in July of 1943. The mainland of Italy was invaded by the British Eight Army in Operation Baytown on 3 Sept 1943 and Italy surrendered on 9 September 1943. Germany took over the Italian battle and the war raged on. Avalanche was the landing at Salerno by the US Fifth Army Slapstick landed more British at Taranto. Germany held up the invaders at their Gustav Line and the US pulled new landings at Anzio where they were unable to advance until May of 1944. Rome was occupied on 4 June 1944. Almost one year later, on 29 April 1945 the German Forces in Italy surrendered.
