The government tries to control the totality of a person's life: every, single decision. That is why it is called totalitarianism (from totality).
An autocracy is a government in which all power is in the hands of one person. It's hard to distinguish an autocracy from a dictatorship. An autocracy differs however from a totalitarian government because the latter is characterized by the desire of the state to control every aspect of everyone's lives, while the power isn't necessarily in the hands of one person.
