Well since human beings are dynamic in character, some people pick up character at a stage in life that puts away friends. Also people depart to long distance and distance separate them from doing the things friends do.

You could try a chapter where the character lives/dies. There could also be other possibilities like maybe a ending where the good character turns evil or vice-versa. Maybe two people do/do not end up together or you could kill off a character close to the main person bringing devastation/happiness to them. Or even leave the chapter on a cliff hanger. Then you could even try to write another chapter or whole story with the same character.
