There is really no such thing as "dog years;" it is merely a rule of thumb comparing a dog's much shorter life expectancy to a human's. Dogs live, on average, between 8 and 15 years depending on the breed, with most medium to large breeds living 10 to 12 years, while humans in industrialized countries live 70-80 years.

Dog years are not a scientific measurement of the animal's development, which is why the idea is not applied to other species. Each species has it's own life span and development timeline. To try and compare every animal's to a human's is unnecessary and can be misleading. For example, dogs are sexually mature before their first birthday and nearly full grown at 1, but humans are do not achieve this milestone until their mid to late teens.

Think about the lifespan of other domesticated animals: cats are similar to small dogs (12-15 years), horses and cows live about 30 years, small animals like rats and gerbils live 1-3 years, and some birds like parrots live to be over 100. How old are you in parrot years?

The answer is simple. A wild animal belongs in the wild away from people. Domestic animals usually live with people.
