Grammar is simply a term to describe the way in which we talk about English. English has a set of rules that, when followed, increases the likelihood that one will be understood. For example, one "grammar" lesson could be over "dangling modifiers." What is a modifier? It is a phrase that describes a part of the sentence and gives more information to the reader/listener. So what is a dangling modifier? It's when that phrase is in the wrong place and results in misinformation. If I were to say "Driving across the savannah, we saw a giraffe," you would know that "we" are driving and that "we" see a giraffe. The modifier is placed appropriately here. However, if I said "We saw a giraffe driving across the savannah," that dangling, mis-placed modifier implies that the giraffe is driving, which is (as far as I know, anyways) impossible. Grammar gives us words to specifically pinpoint the bits and pieces of what we say and write, allowing us to be as specific as possible. Every language has grammar and grammar rules; this is a universally shared feature of human language development. Having at least a basic understanding of these rules and following them in speech and writing gets your point across in a succinct, efficient manner, and allows you to say exactly what you mean exactly how you mean it.

How you know is you have to read the whole sentence and to find out what a modifier is you have to know what a modifier is
