Do not reprove a ridiculer, that he may not hate you. Give a reproof to a wise person and he will love you. (Proverbs 9:8)

A ridiculer has resentment and hatred built up for anyone one trying to help make his path straight. They lack appreciation for the value of reproof. It would not be wise to try to teach them the truth of God's Word because they hate the truth and is simply seeking to ridicule it. On the other hand, a wise person, knows that all discipline doesn't seem great at the time, but since they understand it will make them wiser, they accept it or will love you for it.

These two verses of Scripture mean what they say - Your Mother And Father know more than you and if you listen to their instruction, their wisdom will be ornaments to your inner self.

Additional thoughts:

Proverbs 1:8+9 says:"Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. ."(NIV)

A child's obedience to, and respect for, a parent is a beautiful thing(Exodus 20:12/ Deuteronomy 5:16/Ephesians 6:2), and as they grow to maturity, listening and responding to their parents' council and wisdom(Proverbs 4:10-13), this reverential humble attitude helps them to grow into obedient and respectful worshipers of God. (Hebrews 12:9/1 Thessalonians 2:11+12/Ephesians 6:4/Deuteronomy 6:5-9)."

Their acquired qualities make them truly beautiful in manner and speech.(Proverbs 3:21+22/Colossians 4:6)(Leviticus 19:3/Proverbs 31:26)(Proverbs 4:7-9)
