The Southern wing of the Democratic Party nominated John C Breckinridge, then Vice-President of the US. He received 72 electoral votes to Lincoln's 180, John Bell's 39 and Stephen A Douglas' 12. On the popular vote, however, Douglas pushed him into third place.
