Japanese people in the US had remained apart from other nationalities, and were visibly different in dress, speech, customs. Following the attack on the US at Pearl Harbor, they were viewed as representatives of an enemy. Families of Italians and German descent were more assimilated into their communities, and were not viewed as markedly different.
Italians drink quite a bit of wine, as it is customarily taken with meals. This tends to skew the numbers, based on amount consumed. There are probably no more "heavy drinkers" in Italy and other Italian communities, per capita, than in most others.
They settled in small communities, just like the Italians did on the east coast during the 1890s...often referred to as little Italy's...Chinatowns, etc.
Two independent nations in Africa during the late 1800s were the countries of Ethiopia and Liberia. Ethiopia has remained an independent nation since ancient times except for an invasion by the Italians and Mussolini from 1936 until 1941.
