She is famous today for fighting alongside her husband at Fort Washington, New York where her husband had taken charge of a cannon when the gunner had been killed. Shortly thereafter her husband was also killed and she stepped up the plate and kept on firing the cannon until she too was injured by grape shot in her shoulder, a wound that she would never recover from. Making her the first women to receive a pension from the United States as a disabled soldier.
