In Dred Scott, the U.S. Supreme Court held that African Americans, whether enslaved or free, could not be American citizens and therefore had no standing to sue in federal court.
The court ruled that slaves were property and no rights to sue in court or to be heard.
The Supreme Court eventually decided to give Dred Scott his freedom. They made that decision because they thought that it would end the huge slavery crisis. A few weeks after Dred Scott was freed, he sadly died. :(
