In the UK, the minimum age at which a child can work is 13, unless the work is one of the following sectors:

  • Television
  • Theatre
  • Modelling

In those three cases, a younger child can work but they will require a performance licence from their local authority and there will be heavy restrictions on what the child will be allowed to do.

A child cannot work full time (up to 40 hours a week) until they reach school leaving age which varies by constituent country. In England, the school leaving age was 16 but has been raised to 18. In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, it is 16.
