I dont think any homes are solely solar powered, the sun is obviously not always out so we would be left with nothing usable. I think what happens is solar panels are fitted to houses so that when there is enough sunlight they will be able to use solar energy. There are 25 solar cities now in America but not nearly enough funding if you read up on it, apparently this is due to the US government not taking energy saving as seriously as the rest of the western world. I hope this helps although Im not an expert on the subject nor an American, Im just going with what I have read.

∙ 11y agoFor overall, base on the data from EIA in 2011, 9% of US energy consumption come from renewable resource. Of the 9%, the fraction of Solar energy including PV and Solar Thermal accounted to 2% of total renewable energy. It is only 0.18% of US energy consumption coming from Solar energy.
For electricity, it is reported that 1.8% of the electricity come from Solar energy including PV and Solar Thermal.
