There was only one cause of Black Death, a bacterium spread by a flea. The flea lived on black rats and other rodents. At that time rats infested many of the houses of Europe, especially in the cities. They were not common in the countryside because farmers kept cats to keep rats away from grain. When people would find a ship with a dead crew with merchandise with live fleas, they would take the merchandise and sell it. That way, they spread the infection. Boats carried the infection to the ports of Europe. Rivers carried it to the inland cities. The fleas would infect rats. The rats would infect its fleas. The rat would die. Its fleas would move to other rats and to humans. The disease would go through the city killing most of the rats and the people. In England, the cities were decimated. A number of people left the farms. Many farms were turned into pastures. Many farmers moved to the city and became city dwellers. England underwent a great population shift.
